The Best Summer Job

Is there really anyone who loves every item in their closet? I refuse to believe these people exist. Over the years, I have learned one very important truth about myself: as my identity changes, so do my interests. This particularly pertains to clothing for me, as I have resorted to fashion as a form of self-expression since a young age. When I learned this truth, it made it a lot easier to let go of clothing I no longer like, as I no longer felt sentimental about decluttering. I have learned to view my ever-changing style with optimism: each closet clean-out marks a new shift in my identity. Plus, I have more important things to be sentimental over like pictures, jewelry, stuffed animals, etc.

When I clean out my closet (which try to do this every year or so), I donate and give away about 50% of the clothing I am getting rid of (I recommend donating to a women’s’ shelter near you). However, I often sell my cool and trendy clothing that I know is in demand on Depop. If you are unfamiliar with Depop, it is an e-commerce app where anyone can sell and purchase both handmade and pre-loved clothing and accessories.

Depop was founded by Simon Beckerman who co-founded PIG Magazine, a pop-culture magazine. Beckerman created Depop as a way for PIG readers to shop the items they saw in the magazine, and he later added a selling feature to the platform which has led an eclectic group of sellers to gravitate towards the app. Most of the trends on Depop do not fit my day-to-day style, but I have learned to not be intimidated by what is most popular on Depop. At the end of the day, there are many audiences on the app.

If I haven’t yet convinced you of why you need to sell your clothes on Depop, here are the three main reasons I love selling on the app:

1. Depop makes decluttering less of a sentimental experience.

When you know that you can make money from the clothes you no longer love, it incentivizes you to sell these clothes. In the long run, I end up spending a portion of my Depop money on new clothing I truly love.

2. Depop innately promotes sustainability.

Depop is sustainable because buyers are buying pre-worn clothes as opposed to paying for something freshly made in a factory. This saves resources and prevents clothing from going to waste.

3. You make money!

Depop is a super easy way to make money. I often see my peers make Instagram accounts to sell their clothes, but I think Depop is a better way to do this because the app exposes your items to much wider audience. The only downside is that Depop takes a small fee of your sales, but I personally think it is worth the fee because the app generates a shipping label for you and transfers your money made directly to your PayPal account once sales are made.

If you have little time for a proper summer job, I highly recommend Depop because you can make money on your own time while also having fun in the process. I love customizing my shop, messaging buyers, taking pictures of my items, and the selling process in its entirety. Plus, it feels great to know that someone is super excited about something that no longer sparks joy for you. PS: be sure to follow my Depop @carolinehw !
